DIY Leak Detection Guide

Learn how to identify early signs of water leaks in your home with our step-by-step guides and instructional videos.

Important: While these DIY methods can help identify potential leaks, they are not a substitute for professional leak detection. If you suspect a serious leak, contact a professional immediately.

Checking Faucets & Fixtures

  1. Turn off all water-using appliances in your home.
  2. Inspect each faucet for drips or moisture around the base.
  3. Look under sinks for water stains, dampness, or mold.
  4. Check for loose connections or corrosion on pipes.
  5. Tighten any loose connections (don't overtighten).

Toilet Leak Test

  1. Remove the toilet tank lid.
  2. Add 10-15 drops of food coloring to the tank water.
  3. Wait 15-20 minutes without flushing.
  4. Check the toilet bowl - if color appears, you have a leak.
  5. The flapper valve is the most common cause of toilet leaks.

Checking Appliances

  1. Inspect around washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators.
  2. Look for water stains, dampness, or discoloration on floors.
  3. Check water supply hoses for cracks, bulges, or leaks.
  4. Pull appliances out (if safe) to check behind and underneath.
  5. Inspect drain hoses and connections for signs of leakage.

Water Heater Inspection

  1. Check the floor around your water heater for moisture.
  2. Inspect the tank for rust, corrosion, or mineral buildup.
  3. Look for leaks from the temperature pressure relief valve.
  4. Check inlet and outlet connections for signs of leakage.
  5. Listen for unusual sounds (popping, cracking, or rumbling).

Signs You Need Professional Leak Detection

A sudden increase in your water bill without a change in usage patterns often indicates a hidden leak.

Sounds of Running Water

If you hear water running when all fixtures and appliances are turned off, you likely have a hidden leak.

Visible Mold or Mildew

Unexplained mold growth often indicates hidden moisture from a leak, especially in walls or ceilings.

Decreased Water Pressure

A significant drop in water pressure throughout your home can indicate a leak in your main water line.

Foundation Cracks or Shifting

Water leaks can undermine your foundation, leading to cracks, shifting, or settling.

Warm Spots on Floors

Warm areas on concrete floors can indicate a hot water line leak beneath the slab.
